FREE DOG & CAT SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM LAUNCHES IN LOS ANGELES

NEW PET STERILIZATION PROGRAM MADE POSSIBLE BY BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY

& SPAY NEUTER PROJECT OF LOS ANGELES (SNP LA)

Los Angeles (December 15, 2014) – Take a trip to a Los Angeles animal shelter and you’ll see them: thousands of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats awaiting a second chance at a new life. Most of them were in homes and very much loved, until economic misfortune hits.

In the lowest income areas in Los Angeles, a major reason families relinquish their pets to animal shelters is a lack of access to affordable spay/neuter surgeries. Treduce shelter intake and raise awareness within Los Angeles about this issue, a newly created free pet sterilization program will launch January 12015

Made possible by a grant from Best Friends Animal Society, with Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles (SNP LA), this special service fund will aim to provide free spay and neuter surgeries at SNP LA to Los Angeles pet owners residing in target zip codes, along with animal behavior tips, special pet owner offers and discounts, and information about how to ‘spay it forward’ within their communities.

“Best Friends Animal Society’s NKLA initiative has a goal of making Los Angeles a No-Kill city and spay/neuter is a crucial part of the strategy,” said Marc Peralta, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles. “By funding free, high-quality, convenient spay/neuter services through SNP LA, the lifesaving needle will keep moving forward to the positive and bring us closer to NKLA.”

The zip codes were selected based on high animal shelter intake and euthanasia rates along with need.  Cat owners qualify for free spay and neuter with no income requirement in zip codes 90011, 90032, 90033, 90037, 90044, 90047, 90062, 90731, 90744, 91331, 91335, 91342, 91345, 91402, and 91605.

Dogs weighing over 40 pounds (current or projected weight) qualify for free spay and neuter with qualifying household income requirement of less than $40,000 annually, in zip codes 90002, 90003, 90011, 90016, 90018, 90037, 90043, 90044, 90047, 90062, 91331, 91335, 91342, 91352, 91402

The two organizations will collectively provide two hundred fifty free dog surgeries and five hundred free cat surgeries at SNP LA’s three permanent clinics in Pico Rivera, California, (9325 Slauson Avenue, Pico Rivera, CA 90660), San Pedro, California, (957 North Gaffey Street, San Pedro CA 90731) and Van Nuys, California, (14409 Vanowen Street, Van Nuys, CA 91405) with an average value of over $100 per dog and over $50 per cat for spay/neuter servicesAll information on this new program is available in both English and Spanish to ensure the message is received throughout the community.  Appointments can be made by calling (310)574-5555 – all operators are bilingual in English and Spanish.

“We want every pet owner in Los Angeles who wants spay and neuter services to have access to this safe and effective procedure,” commented SNP LA Medical Director Dr. Elaine Lukic, DVM.  “To have successfully cared for approximately 120,000 animals since first opening seven years ago, is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the continued advocacy for spay and neuter by partners like Best Friends.”

Spay and neuter remains the most effective form of birth control for cats and dogs, which helps reduce shelter intake, and ultimately contributes to lower euthanasia rates. Every year, approximately 4 million cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized across America due to overcrowding in shelters.

Despite prevalent myths among pet owners, spay and neuter benefits far outweigh the risks for pets. The surgery ensures lifelong health benefits for pets including a lower cancer risk and improved behavior. Sterilization is one of the most routinely performed procedures for cats and dogs. Most pets go home the same day and return to normal activities within 24 to 72 hours, with a full recovery in five to seven days.
